September 3, 2009 - Hans Liebscher and Custom Copper Works are pleased to announce the launch of a brand new website dedicated to custom copper decorations. Located at hanscopper.com, the site is tailored to homeowners and design professionals looking to incorporate the luster and prestige of well-made copper into their home building projects.
“Visitors to the new website will be treated to a rich, multimedia experience,” noted Liebscher, a renown coppersmith who works out of a design studio in San Marcos, California. “Each one of us is familiar with the color and durability of copper, from the pennies in our pocket to the pipes running through our house. But what many do not realize is the beauty and versatility copper can provide to any home. Our new website aims to awaken the senses, and illustrate how beautiful copper finishings can be.”
The website features an ever-expanding line of copper products designed by Liebscher. He has been entranced by the metal’s properties since childhood in Germany, where the green, copper roofs stood out against so much devastation from the war. “Copper has slowly made in-roads in the United States, particularly in the Midwest and East Coast,” added Liebscher. “But in Europe, copper has been prized as the material of choice for centuries.”
He never forgot the majesty of the metal, and eventually began sculpting and molding it into decorative products. He then began working on applying his own copper roofs and fixtures. His work quickly became noticed by architects and decorators from all over the world, with Liebscher recognized for his beautiful designed leader heads, gutter and downspout brackets, repoussé work for range hoods, fire place mantels and adorning finials. The Coppersmith Development Association (www.copper.org) even named him Coppersmith of the 21st Century in 2008.
Today, he is a highly-sought after copper craftsman by both individuals and institutions. He is known for his unique repoussé and chasing work like copper gargoyles, frieze bands with elaborate embellishments , plaques, coats of arms and lately repoussé fixtures for breweries. He completed very intricate and challenging historic restoration work for the Griffith Observatory, and is currently restoring the world-famous Scotty’s Castle in Death Valley, a project that will be completed in the coming months.
Liebscher’s love affair with copper is reflected in the new website. He continues his education in the fields of copper and metallurgy, traveling the world in regions known for their master coppersmiths. “There are always new challenges and new ways of bringing copper to life, but this is a trade you cannot learn from a book,” Liebscher added.
“Through our new website, I hope to share that passion with others, and give everyone a sense of the magic and value that copper can provide to any home. And both figuratively and literally, copper is the original ‘green’ material. For the past 4000 years, copper fixtures have been recycled and put to use in fixtures with lifespans measured not in years, but in centuries.”
